How to free up storage on your phone

"Storage full" almost always comes down to photos and videos, app caches, and old downloads. Tackle them in that order.

  1. Back up and offload photos. Photos and videos are the number-one space user. Back them up to a cloud service or computer, then remove local copies you do not need.
  2. Clear app caches. On Android, Settings › Apps › (app) › Storage › Clear cache for the heaviest apps. iPhone handles caches automatically, but offloading unused apps helps.
  3. Delete downloads and offline media. Old files in Downloads, and offline music/video/podcasts, quietly use gigabytes. Remove what you have finished with.
  4. Offload unused apps. On iPhone, Settings › General › iPhone Storage shows a per-app breakdown and an "Offload" option. On Android, uninstall apps you no longer open.
  5. Empty "Recently deleted". Deleted photos and files often sit in a trash folder for 30 days — empty it to reclaim the space now.

Frequently asked questions

What takes up the most space on a phone?

Photos and videos, followed by app data/caches and downloaded media. Backing up and offloading photos usually frees the most.

Is it safe to clear an app's cache?

Yes. Cache is temporary data the app rebuilds as needed. Clearing it frees space and can fix a misbehaving app; it does not delete your account or settings.
